Objective

Dr. Mohan's Diabetes Specialities Centre., was inaugurated on September 1, 1991 by Late Prof. M. Viswanathan, Director, Diabetes Research Centre, Madras & father of Dr. V. Mohan. The centre was started with a two fold purpose:

	To provide comprehensive and Total Diabetic Care i.e. not only routine treatment of diabetes but also of its various complications.
	To provide this modern and efficient diabetes service right in the heart of Chennai so that the facilities could be made available to a larger section of the population.
The response to the centre has been phenomenal both from the patients as well as from the medical profession.

The concept of providing Total Diabetes Care under one roof has been welcomed by all sections of the society. Within a span of 19 years, over 2,45,000 diabetic patients have been registered/treated at the centre making it one of the fastest growing diabetic centres in Asia.

Our Motto - Excellence in Diabetes Care

The logo of the centre is 'a drop of blood' representing blood sugar- the root cause which, if left uncontrolled-results in further complications that affect the eyes, heart kidneys, and feet. The motto "Towards excellence in diabetes care" modestly proclaims that "excellence" if anything is elusive and one continuously endeavors to attain it. We at Dr. Mohan's DSC, are constantly trying to move closer to this elusive goal.

Comprehensive TOTAL DIABETES CARE is offered at the centre at three levels: Primary, Secondary and Tertiary.

	At the Primary level, anyone who suspects he/she may have developed diabetes, can undergo a comprehensive screening programme to detect or rule out diabetes.

	At the Secondary level, treatment is given to all known diabetic patients with the aim of preventing the dreadful complications of diabetes.

	At the Tertiary level, if one has already developed diabetic complications, therapy for relief of suffering from any of the diabetes related complications is also available at the centre. The centre is one of the few of its kind in India to offer such a comprehensive diabetes treatment facility.

Dr. Mohan's DSC is one of the few of its kind in the World to offer such a one-stop comprehensive diabetes treatment facility. Since its inception in 1991, over 2,45,000 diabetic patients have been registered and about 13,000 new patients are added every year. The prevalence of known Type 2 diabetes in Chennai is 7.2 % and our centre provides medical assistance to approximately 15 % of this known diabetic population. Among the patients attending the centre, 60 % are from the metropolitan city of Chennai, 20 % from the southern region of India, 10 % from the northern and eastern part of India and 5 % from other countries like Singapore, Sri Lanka , Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, etc.,

Milestones

	September 1991: Dr. Mohan's DSC (or M.V. Diabetes Specialities Centre as it was called then) inaugurated by Prof. M. Viswanathan.

	June 1992: Diabetes International Research Education Charitrable Trust (DIRECT) established for charity (free diabetes treatment).

	September 1993: Inauguration of In-Patient hospitalization services at Dr. Mohan's DSC in another rented building at Royapettah.

	March 1996: Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF) established at Gopalapuram Chennai.

	November 1996: Dr. Mohan's DSC and MDRF affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University, Chennai.

	September 1997: Dr. Mohan's DSC moves to its own building at Conran Smith Road, Gopalapuram, Chennai.

	November 1998: Dr. Mohan's DSC becomes world's first ISO 9001-2000 certified diabetes centre.

	December 1998: `Diabetes 2000', world's largest massive public education programme organized by Dr. Mohan's DSC for the first time in Chennai.

	September 2000: A memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between Dr. Mohan's DSC and Lions Club International for the unique project "MDRF Lions Diabetes FREE (To Fight, Reduce, Eliminate and Educate) Programme".

	November 2000: MoU signed with University of Wales at Cardiff for implementation of the "Tele-Diabetic retinopathy project" for community screening for retinopathy.

	December 2000: `Diabetes 2000', world's largest massive public education programme on diabetes was conducted again at Kalaignar Arangam, Chennai.

	September 2001: MDRF moves to its own premises adjoining the hospital - S.S Jhunjhnuwala Diabetes Research Centre of MDRF inauguarated.

	September 2002: Biochemistry laboratory of Dr. Mohan's DSC accredited as National Accreditation Board for testing and Calibration Laboratory (NABL) .

	September 2003: Branch of Dr. Mohan's DSC inaugurated at Annanagar, Chennai.

	September 2003: 'Diabetes 2003', a massive diabetes exhibition conducted for the third time in Chennai.

	September 2005: Dr. Mohan's DSC extends its services to Andhra Pradesh by inaugurating a Branch at Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad.

	September 2005: 'Diabetes 2005', a massive diabetes exhibition conducted for the first time in Hyderabad.

	December 2005: Dr. Mohan's Diabetes AVP Ayurvedic Centre Inaugurated at Gopalapuram, Chennai.

	July 2006: MDRF recoginized as 'ICMR Advanced Centre for Genomics of Type 2 Diabetes'.

	September 2006: Inauguration of 'Indira Eye Institute for Diabetes' - a unit of Dr. Mohan's DSC

	September 2006: Branch of Dr. Mohan's DSC inaugurated at Tambaram, Chennai.

	September 2007: Kallam Anji Reddy Research Centre of MDRF inaugurated at Siruseri in the outskirts of Chennai.
