Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF): Advancing Diabetes Research in India

Diabetes, a chronic non-communicable disease (NCD), has reached epidemic proportions worldwide. As of mid-2023, over 529 million adults globally have diabetes, a number projected to soar to 1.3 billion by 2050. Among them, more than 95% have Type 2 Diabetes (T2DM).

India is at the epicenter of the global diabetes epidemic, ranking second in the world with 101 million people affected as of 2021. This figure is set to rise significantly in the coming years, placing a heavy burden on the nation’s healthcare system, economy, and overall well-being. Without immediate intervention, millions of young and middle-aged Indians will develop diabetes at an alarming rate.

The Need for Quality Diabetes Research in India

A critical step in tackling any public health crisis is gathering accurate, region-specific data. Until recently, India’s efforts to curb diabetes prevalence and complications were hindered by the lack of high-quality, original research. Studies from Western populations could not be directly applied to Indians, as the natural progression, risk factors, and impact of diabetes differ significantly across ethnic groups.

Recognizing the urgent need for a world-class diabetes research center in India, Dr. V. Mohan and Dr. M. Rema established the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF) in 1996.

MDRF: A Global Leader in Diabetes Research

From its modest beginnings in a small room, MDRF has grown into a globally recognized institute dedicated to cutting-edge research on diabetes, its complications, prevention, and management. MDRF collaborates with leading national and international organizations to advance diabetes research, shaping policies and healthcare solutions tailored to India’s unique needs.

Key Areas of Research at MDRF:

  • Epidemiological studies on diabetes prevalence and risk factors
  • Genetic and molecular research to understand diabetes susceptibility
  • Clinical trials and innovative treatments for diabetes and related conditions
  • Prevention programs focusing on lifestyle interventions and public awareness
  • Diabetes complications research, including cardiovascular, renal, and neurological disorders

MDRF’s Mission: Combating Diabetes Through Science & Innovation

With a multidisciplinary team of researchers, clinicians, and public health experts, MDRF continues to spearhead groundbreaking studies that drive better diabetes prevention, diagnosis, and treatment strategies.
